… And you just realized that they don’t exactly make a degree for “that job Ryan Seacrest does with a mic on TV.”
What’s the career path for becoming a host of live events or TV shows? Do you have to host a game show first? Make it big in stand-up comedy? Play a major role in a syndicated sitcom?
Easy, tiger. We’ll walk through this together. First, let’s get into alignment and all get on the same page about hosting and public speaking.
A host is a skilled performer or entertainer who sets the tone for a particular event.
He/She supports the purpose of the event (or show) by connecting to the audience, communicating important information, directing the order of activities and managing the energy and expectations of the room.
Sometimes they host a talk show, a game show, or unscripted TV. They are hired to work the stage at a special event or warm-up an audience before the celebrity appears.
Regardless of how or where they work the mic, public speaking is never as effortless as Steve Harvey makes it look.
But that’s part of the magic. A great host makes the audience feel seen, heard, and welcomed. Their charisma flows off the stage (or out of the TV) until you’re certain you’re swapping jokes with your best friend in their living room.
So how do you get there? Are some people just born to be warm and inclusively playful like Kelly Clarkson? Witty like Keke Palmer? Did Jimmy Fallon always know how to convince celebrities to film hilarious musical parodies with him?
Nope, nope, and nope.
No one becomes a performer through sheer passion alone. The skills of hosting can be taught.
Whether you’re a leader, performer, or someone who wants others to take action from the ideas you’re communicating, these Hosting skills are applicable to your life, your relationships, and with any audience, regardless if you have a “stage” or not.
Hosting is a craft I’m constantly honing and perfecting, even after two decades in the industry.
Every event, every stage, every audience is a new experience.
“Whether you’re a leader, performer, or someone who wants others to take action from the ideas you’re communicating, these Hosting skills are applicable to your life, your relationships, and with any audience, regardless if you have a “stage” or not.”
Do you feel something magical happen when you’re speaking in front of an audience?
You don’t need a literal stage. Or a real spotlight. Sometimes the entertainment bug bites you in the cereal aisle of the grocery store.
Your personality attracts people wherever you go. You’ve been accused of having the “gift of gab” more than once… this week.
I was on my way to becoming an engineer. I was enrolled in the prerequisites. I might have been a good one, too.
But a spark shot through me when I first felt the power of a microphone in my hand.
There’s a difference between the accidental stage you create in the middle of the dance floor and the stage you claim with confidence. Hosting is about convincing an audience — a group that isn’t sure who you are — to join you on the best ride of their lives.
Charisma is a skill you can learn.
It’s a damn shame that you can learn about electricity in college and can’t learn the communication skills to command the energy of a stage. Hosting should be taught alongside business classes, the way I see it. Leaders of any organization need skills to present their ideas in front of an audience.
I’m about to change all that.
Imagine getting paid by your favorite brands to engage an audience with the power of your personality.
You radiate swagger as you step onto the stage, fully prepared to harness the energy of the room. You know exactly how to direct the next 30 unscripted minutes into an experience.
Your eyes connect with a hesitant guest in the front row…
The pitch of your voice, the subtle cues of your gestures, and the pace of your steps on the stage is your ticket to inviting that single person (and the rest of this audience) on a journey.
That means learning some intangible but necessary skills:
I’ll also teach you practical skills to make the mic do your bidding:
Since you’re intrigued by the offer, you’re probably wondering… why would I listen to this Aaron Smalls anyway?
I crafted Just Mic That for my younger self: the upstart host who found his calling on a Nickelodeon sound stage.
Since then, I’ve worked with networks like ABC, FOX, Food Network, Hulu; names such as Kelly Clarkson, Anthony Anderson, Liza Koshy, Ken Jeong; and brands including Mercedes Benz, T-Mobile, Visa, and the NFL.
I love what I do, and I believe that EVERYONE can get better at speaking from a stage. Charisma is a skill that the best hosts craft over a lifetime.
Importantly for you, I’m obsessed with what makes a great host. And I don’t believe in gatekeeping. I want to share my skills and teach more upstart hosts like I used to be how to excel and thrive in this profession.
I’m on a mission to make HOSTS the next rockstar profession.
Wanna come along with me??
I feel more confident as a host. I feel prepared. I have an edge above other people because they’re just learning on the job. There were so many things that I just did not know.
Aaron is such a great teacher. He literally breaks it down so that you can clearly understand it. It was to the point where I had little to no questions because he covered everything.
He knows his craft. You can tell that he’s passionate about it. And you can’t buy that. I wish I could bottle it up, but passion — you either have it or you don’t. And Aaron has the passion for hosting.
